*Business and technology innovator ready to help mobile operators prevent illegal content appearing on their networks*
LONDON, 24 October 2008: On Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) Awareness Day, Detica, the
business and technology consultancy, warns of the growing challenge
that mobile operators face to prevent online child sexual abuse content
being made accessible on consumer devices such as mobile phones and
PDAs. As an active IWF Funding Council member, Detica has extensive
experience identifying and blocking illegal online content through its
Detica StreamShield® solution and urges mobile operators to act now to prevent child sexual abuse content appearing on their networks.
John Gorbutt, Detica StreamShield® Sales Director, says:
"The vast majority of child sexual abuse content is accessed through
conventional Internet connections. However, there is now a growing
danger that this threat will spread as broadband networks, currently
being rolled out by mobile operators, are misused by criminals in the
same way.
"Building on the good work started by the IWF, we are pleased to see
other proactive industry initiatives, such as the GSMAs Mobile
Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse Content appearing, as this is a
serious problem that mobile operators need to tackle now. The race is
on for mobile operators to implement an effective method of identifying
child sexual abuse content and blocking access to it. This means not
only getting to grips with the complexity of the data analysis task but
also achieving this with minimal impact on operations. Detica, with its
proven StreamShield® content filtering solution and its
unrivalled track record in intelligence and security systems stands
ready to help mobile operators face this challenge."
This year many leading fixed-line broadband operators including O2
and Opal Telecom, the network provider for Carphone Warehouse
purchased the Detica StreamShield® Content Security Gateway
to improve online security. This is an advanced carrier-grade content
processing solution designed for high-speed Internet Service Provider
(ISP) and mobile operator networks. It enables ISPs to pipe clean,
filtered Internet content directly into homes and businesses without
the need for customers to install any specialised software or hardware
on their computers.
Detica StreamShield® is a member of the Internet Watch
Foundation (IWF), the UK Internet Hotline for the public to report
their exposure to online child sexual abuse content hosted anywhere in
the world and criminally obscene and incitement to racial hatred
content hosted in the UK. The IWF works in partnership with the online
industry, government, police and the public. As a result of this
self-regulatory approach, less than 1% of online child sexual abuse
content has apparently been hosted in the UK since 2003, down from 18%
in 1997.
Gorbutt concludes: "We are extremely proud to continue to support
the Internet Watch Foundation in its ongoing mission to rid the
Internet of illegal online content. Detica StreamShield® will
continue to work with the IWF, service providers and mobile operators
in making the Internet whether indoors or mobile a safer place for
everyone."
